We firest built a canoe with the accompanying paddles. The next year two kayaks with the accompanying paddle that was pretty much the canoe style paddle with a blade on both ends.

I then read about the greenland paddle, needed another paddle for the second kayak, so went for it. Instantly the Greenland paddle became the favorite and the other paddle was ALLWAYS the last chosen. I then made another Greenland paddle and the first, beavertail, paddle usaually sits when both kayaks are on the water.

one thing you need to determine though...what will you be using the kayak for? If it is for pleasure on lakes, rivers, etc. you may first try a Greenland style, it is nearly effortless paddling.

Several members of this board have eccellent instructions on building them along with pics: One has already responded, there are links on this sight that will send you to others, Ross Leidy also has an ecellent area on his sight.

Bottom line is that you CAN build it yourself, but it probably will not be cheaper than buying ONE. Difference is that you will have spent the same money but you will have several paddles. It is fun, easy, cheap (the price of a good Spruce or Cedar 2x4) and addictive.
