I would recommend using a wide blade (3/4" or so) to keep the blade from wandering. I tried 3/4" x 3tpi and 3/4" x 6 tpi blades. The 6 tpi blade cut a little slower and slightly smoother. I still had to run the strips through the planer, so I would recommend using a 3 or 4 tpi blade with a thin kerf.

The two advantages of using a bandsaw instead of a table saw are a thinner kerf and safety. Since I had to run the strips through a planer, I don't think I saved any material by using a bandsaw. The safety is a great advantage. There is no chance for kickback with a bandsaw. There is a potential for kickback with the planer, so stand off to the side if/when you run the strips through.
