Why not spend a day and build a shorter Greenland style paddle for your spare. Even an unfinished 'rush' job would suffice. Remember this is for emergencies, and when you want a paddle, you don't want just half of one. A paddle that is taken apart into two pieces needs to be assembled to be used -- and you may have other things on your mind at the time -- like getting upright.

Besides, the cost of a single ferrule is more than the cost of two or three entire Greenland paddles if you make them from 2x4's, or inexpensive 2x6's. Get a 6 foot board and whittle away.

Just my thoughts on this.
