Dana,

Since I paddle solo, I purchased for $100 a pair of air sponsons to act as a back-up to a paddle float for re-entry. They're inflatable tubes, about 3 1/2' long, which attach to your kayak with clip-in-type buckles. Half the buckle is pre-attached to your deck rigging fore and aft of the cockpit, and if you find yourself out of your boat, you attach the sponsons, flip the boat over, then inflate them. With one tube on either side, they essentially make the kayak about 1' wider. This might be a good option for you. They can be installed so that they're out of the water (so there's no drag) when the boat is upright, but provide bouyancy when the boat is leaned. The drawback is that there are 2 nylon web straps that run under the kayak, so there's a bit of drag there. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll try to find them. I saw them on a website, and the name is Sea Wing air sponsons.

A cheap alternative: a couple of those 'pool noodles' strapped on or attached to boards which are clamped to one of the cockpits...
