Take a look at this site. It outlines the construction of a kayak that is primarily fiberglass, with some additional fabrics thrown in for strength, stiffness, etc.

You notice that he builds a form first. If you make that 'form' from cedar strips and just cover it with a relatively thin layer of glass cloth you have a complete wood strip boat, instead of just a mold for a boat that needs much more glass cloth and resin.
