I am not familiar with this particular model, but I have tried other, shorter, Wilderness Systems models.

Since you added the word "eventually" to your question, the answer is "yes". But try it in more sheltered waters (flat rivers, ponds, small lakes) first to become comfortable with it. Once that flat water starts to feel a little boring, then go for Lake Michigan.

Your boat is considered short, as sea kayaks go. Therefore, it will not track (go straight) as well as the longer, more traditional sea kayaks. So you may experience some difficulty controlling it in heavy seas. After using it for a while, you will discover the boat's ability and limitations, and you will know what "heavy seas" are for the boat. I think you'll find that if the seas are 3' or less, you won't have a problem, but if the wind kicks up 4-5' seas, you'll have a heck of a time controlling it.

So just go out and paddle it. Start with flat water, and work your way up as you get more comfortable. When you feel ready to tackle Lake Michigan, start with a sheltered bay. Take your time, and you'll have a lot of fun. And check the weather forecast before you go. If you hear "small craft advisory" don't go.

By the way, I hope you got life jackets with the boat. If not, get those right away. And WEAR them whenever you are in the boat. The law in most states say you just have to have them with you, but WEAR them. And when you start to get comfortable with the boat, and feel you don't need to wear them, WEAR them.
