I'm certain that I didn't spend $50 building my fiberglass seats. I used mostly scraps of fiberglass that I had left over from the kayaks. I'm talking pieces that only a pack-rat would save. Only the top and bottom layers were full pieces, the rest was just a jumbled patchwork of scraps. I bet I spent no more than $10 for everything, including the two full pieces of glass, epoxy, and bit of graphite powder. Of course, I had a little more cost in making the seat plug, but that's a 1-time cost (and it probably cost no more than $10 itself). For me, it was cheaper than building one from minicell foam.
