On the specific question of reducing epoxy runover from the butt joints onto the plywood, Pygmy suggested a simple technique that worked well for me. You're basically building a sandwich of the plywood pieces, fiberglass tape, epoxy, and mylar over that, with the whole thing weighted down by pieces of 2 x4 and bricks. Where the mylar ends and the plywood begins, you may get some expoy runoff, which can result in a blob effect that's hard to sand off later. Taping the plywood could work but you still might get a step where the tape ends. Pygmy suggested using the plastic squegee to spread any excess epoxy out onto the plywood, starting where the mylar ends. You're going to be epoxy-saturating the plywood later anyway so this little extra epoxy doesn't hurt.
