Well Jim, yes the extra weight comes from everything, but you've got a sturdy yak. If you are using regular tape then it's 9oz. Using tape on the outside would be a lot of fairing to do as well as unnecessary reinforcement. If you want to stop making it heavier then just putting 6oz on the bottom would be enough,with appropriate wear strips on the ends. With one or two thin coats of epoxy on the deck. You have 18oz-24oz glass on the interior seams in the cockpit area,on top of 1/4" ply,,,a lot of kayaks have just 6oz. Even without exterior glass your kayak should be as strong as most boats,if not more.
