I don't think epoxies have many VOC's (volatile organic compounds), which make other "stinky" products like acetone, toluene, xylene, (which are themselves VOC's) paint thinner, lacquer thinner, varnish, some oil-based paints, gasoline, and kerosene.

You can get sensitized by epoxy fumes. Just because you can't smell them doesn't mean they're not there. If you keep the basement doors closed, that should be enough to keep your friend from being sensitized. I have used epoxies in my basement for 2 years and my wife has never noticed. I have, though, started wearing a respirator myself. (I only used to use a paper dust mask and only when mixing in cabosil and wood flour)

I've never heard of anyone's lungs aching, but I won't say you're crazy--definitely smart to wear that respirator.
