But many of the people here have developed friendships to various degrees and a certain amount of chit-chat is a fact of life.

If you are just trying to extract all the information possible without having to actually interact with people, you could just print of all the posts as they become available in the archives.

I think everyone here finds that out of these "unimportant" discussions come some good ideas on kayak building. Sometimes the thread is just fun but what the hell even kayak builders like a laugh. If you limit the discussions many ideas will not develope.
