Several clubs and commercial trip leaders organize trips around Manhatten. It is definently a worthwhile trip, offering views of the city that few ever see. Bring a camera! The total distance is over 30 miles, but all trips are planned to take advantage of tidal currents. If you leave at the right time you can paddle with the current the whole way. The trip takes about 10 hours. The effort is about equal to paddling 20 miles on still water.

The usual way to do the trip is to start on the Hudson near the south end of Manhatten and head south. Catch the turning tide and head north up the East River with the current, which can reach 4 knots. Wait for the current to change again before starting into the Harlem river. Then paddle hard until you reach the Hudson and ride the outgoing current back to the starting point.

If possible, do the trip with a group of paddlers, just because of the length and the lack of good spots to cut the trip short and get off the water. The Hudson River can get quite rough, especially around the southern end of Manhatten. Wakes from ferries and other boats are substantial. Boat traffic can be a problem during warmer weather.
