And I used to think I was masochistic and loved to beat my head against a wall!

I know this will be ignored, but Nicks right. So is Rob. Build the boat according to the plans, that's what the design layout is for and based on. trying to interpret a set of plans you don't understand into another building method that the original designer doesn't understand is certainly going to result in the sorts of problems you've got.

But heck, you're determined to do it your way, so have a good time.
