This idea is prob quite stupid, but what if instead of rubber bands you used threads of glass fibre. Say you pulled the threads of some 10 oz cloth and used one at each strip. Clamp the first under the first washer, unwound the thread so it is flat going thru the future joint, and when you do the next one it'll maybe squeeze flat and not make much of a space between???(probably will but what about dental floss??{unwaxed}). Afterwards sand it out not worrying about all the hairs as theyll actually keep yer yak together and wet out any way??
Dumb idea, but would bring a new meaning to stitch and strip and glue.
