Unfortunately, epoxy is a 2-part system where its takes exactly the correct ratio of resin to hardner to cure. This is at the molecular level. Epoxy hardens by the joining of molucules together into long chains. If there is any excess of one part over another, that excess has nothing to bind to and is left as an uncured void in the matrix. To properly cure we are instructed to mix very thoroughly before applying epoxy, this is because the 2 parts don't flow or mix together vey well on their own. Thus any of the uncured epoxy in the wood cells will remain so.

Epoxy components are soluble in acetone but as the acetone evaporates it leaves the epoxy behind thus acetone must be scrubbed into the surface and removed before too much evaporation occurs.
