For my front hatch, I determined where the bulkhead would be placed, and made the hatch opening start a few inches from that. It's all a matter of preference and what you feel "looks right" for your boat. Another consideration is whether or not you have some natural borders formed by the strip pattern to help define the shape and position of the hatch. I used a strip coming up from the side to define the edge of my fore hatch.
