In Response To: Standard Spray Skirt Dimensions? (Dave Houser)

There are many different sizes of spray skirts available now. It used to be that the "regular" skirt was about the size of Perception's WW cockpit (like the Dancer, the Mirage, the Pirouette, the Corsica, etc.)

Many British sea kayaks have a very short, round cockpit. A lot of newer WW designs have very long "keyhole"-shaped cockpits, so there are skirts, especially quality neoprene ones, available for most any shape. If you're wanting a nylon or Goretex skirt, you might have to stick with the more "standard" shape.

To answer the second half of your question, no, I don't know of any published cockpit dimensions for production boats. Make friends with your local paddlesports retailer (you'll be buying a PFD, compass, flares, strobe, sprayskirt!, and paddlewear from them anyway) and they'll probably let you trace the cockpit of a boat you fit in well.

Wild Wasser, SnapDragon, and Harmony all make great neoprene skirts. Harmony (Perception/Dagger accessories) also has quality non-neoprene skirts. I still haven't found a website for them, but I just bought a neo. Harmony skirt and I'm favorably impressed. I was never impressed by Perception accessories, so the Harmony merger was a step in the right direction.
