Archer,

Saw a kerf into either end of the dowels you use. After you tap your dowels in place, tap a trunnel into either end of the dowel (perpendicular to the grain of the gunwales, so you don't split them), so you can lock them in place. Lash the gunnels 6" - 12" further down the gunnel afterwards. If I had the ability/initiative, I'd post a picture of it for you. Hopefully, I'll be able to do that soon.
