I tried a heat gun an an old door that I have, and ended up going to a chemical stripper. Probably the best thing would be to take it to a furniture strip shop. I'd recommend good varnish for a finish. Thin it on the first coat. Also, there is a finishing board at WOOD magazine's site, look at woodmagazine.com.
