Max, If I understand you correctly, you want to go with "B". You want to lay the horizontal strips, right?. Make every 5th or 6th strip span the entire length of the cockpit cutout. This will support the shorter strips, preventing them from sagging - This is from Nicks book. Just use tape (or hot glue) to hold them in place, no staples needed. On my Expedition Single, I beveled the edge of the cutout, and beveled the mating edge of each strip to match. I only used a few scraps of tape, the glue (elmers) was enough to hold them in place.
