I understand this used to be common practice for storing birchbark canoes to keep the hulls moist and flexible.

Check local laws before doing this, including some of those old, arcane marine salvage laws, and your real estate laws.

In some cases you do not own the water or the beach, or shoreline of a lake that abuts your property, so you would be putting your boat in a public area.

In some areas if you recover a sunken boat it is yours! So anyone who got to your boat before you could legally claim it as their own. No matter how well your craft was marked or tagged it could be claimed as an abandoned vessel. You could have a court battle to get your boat back!

In some places you might be cited for violating various ordinances: anything from obstructing a waterway to disposing of a toxic substance.
