I agree with Paul on the use of Ash. I have used it in the cabinet making field and have found it to be Hard and will tend to splinter if you try to bend it too far without steaming it. I would try it first and see how far you can go. Poplar is a bit more forgiving, but,out here in California, the poplar I've seen is pretty undramatic as far as figure and the green color?????? It's different. Ash will pretty much stay the same color when finished, but, the poplar has a tendancy to darken a bit. More food for thought.
