You're right, although called cedar, it's actually related to mahogany. I don't have any specs on the specific gravity of spanish cedar, but it will make for a heavier boat. You might think about going with 3/16" strips in place of the usual 1/4" to save a bit of weight. $4/ft sounds like a great deal! -Dean
