I used cherry for mine and the were really not too heavy, but obviously more than cedar. cedar I think would be too soft though. If you can find sassafrass it might be a better choice. It is hard for it's weight, light and bends reasonably well. Long lengths are hard to find but scarfs are not too difficult. Also because of its grain (semi-open) it can often be found with curly figure, here in SW Virginia propbably 80% of what i find is curly.
