I put a little Ritchie X-10 Sport compass on the deck of my Chesapeake 17. It just has a 1 7/8" dia. blue dial, but it's quite visible and it's attached up behind my front hatch cover. That small of dial does swing a bit (not sure if 2 3/4" is a lot better) but at $20, it was a great value. It has a bracket mount that is currently bolted (nylon bolts) to the deck, but I'm figuring out how to surface mount it.

Pete Rudie and I were looking at the X-15 flush mount compass--it would fit just great in the front of the cockpit recess on a Guillemot, but would be easily covered by a sprayskirt grab loop there--still worth looking into if you have an angled surface in which to mount it.
