Plane Advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently building a greenland paddle out of western red cedar and I need a block plane. I've had a look in the local hardware shop, But there seem to be many types (most made by Stanley).

My question is, What am I looking for in a block plane? And what are the differences? I'll be using it mostly to build paddles (cause i'm sure this one will break) and strippers. Any recommended makes/models? I'm willing to spend about $120 Australian (that's about eighty bucks US)

TIA

Paul.
