Idea for s-n-g take-apart

The only take-apart design I've seen is a 3-piece Romany (fiberglass); I've never seen such a critter in wood. But here's an idea:

1) Build a stitch-and-glue boat as usual. (easy step -- only about a hundred hours...:)

2) Cut the boat into 3 sections approximately at bulkhead locations. For this step you need steady hands and lots of courage. I would highly reccomend a Pygmy kit for the following reasons: a) It is built using temporary frames which are then removed. The boat is then empty end-to-end. This means you can cut the boat wherever it is convenient. b) Due to the multi-paneled deck, the Pygmy has no built-in residual stresses in the wood. Cutting the deck of a CLC might require that you add extra supports to keep the deck surface fair and to keep the hull from flaring out.

3) Mount bulkheads on each section. On the center section, put the bulkheads just slightly recessed into the end; maybe 1/2". Then use extra plywood strips to create a recessed lip around the end secions. Install bulkheads on the very ends of these lips. When the parts are assembled, the bow and stern will slide into the center section kind of like how a shoebox can sit inside its overturned cover.

4) Attach the secitons with studs mounted to one of the bulkheads, going through the other, and tightened with threaded knobs. Use 4 of them; one close to each shear, one at the keel, one at the deck ridge. Knobs should be installed on the inside of the end sections through the hatches, otherwise it could be difficult to tighten knobs a the bottom of the foot area of the cockpit. Install a gasket in between the bulkheads to keep water out.

I want royalties if you patent this idea...:) Dean
