I've gone through a few sanders in the last couple of years. Here is my opinion for what it is worth. I started out with a nice little DeWalt 1/4 sheet sander. Loved it - but it broke down in less than a year - so I bought the Porter Cable version. It is still working well. However, I'm not too handy and was doing LOTS of sanding on my first boat project - so I bought a BIG heavy BOSCH random orbital variable speed unit that uses the 5 inch velcro pads. Nice unit - good price - but too heavy to really use on curved surfaces or one handed - so I bought the small DeWalt version of same. Really like it - its fast and friendly - sometimes too fast though. Also - this one just quit today. I think my problem is working outside in the 110 degree heat here in Phoenix. I like the 1/4 sheet sanders because they are light and not as quick - good for final sanding - and sanding over edges - and they use cheap paper. The velcro pad random orbitals are probably the way to go if you are smart enough to just buy one. A bit heavier - much faster. Apparently if you work in the heat - the Porter Cables hold up better.

Have fun - and don't breathe the stuff.
