IMO, the accent strips on the hull looks best if it is parallel to the sheerline or maybe slightly less curved to accomodate a cheater. Straight across might look a little odd, and you're right; you would have to make some awfully long cheaters. The best thing to do is clamp the strip in place and see how it looks (look at it upside down too) in different configurations. Stare at it for awhile and see which you like better, which will take more work, do a mental juggle, and see which way comes out on top. Don't sweat the decision though, because it's a wood boat and it's going to look good either way. Just so long as it appeals to you.
