Jan, I didn't steam bend my cockpit coaming, but I did create a set of stacked, curved Ash laminations prior to installing on the vertical part of the coaming. The thickness was probably around 5/16" (the vertical dimension, and I had no problem flexing it to conform to the curve of the deck. The trick is to have a lot of spring clamps. I have some pictures of this on my Guillemot page.
