I reciently came across a spruce furring strip 1 x 4 x 12 - totally clear which I bought at a local lumber Co. for $3.70.

When I cut out a blank for a Greenland paddle and compaired with my pine blanks, It was noticably heavier. Too heavy.

I would not make the immediate assumption that spruce is always lighter than Pine. When I buy boards - they hate me because I want to pick each one up for weight. There's a lot of difference between the weights of various boards of the same dimension according to it's sap content (slow growth / fast growth and where It came off the log).

According to charts, yes, spruce is supposed to be lighter but I 've been surprised many times.
