I think most folks are using epoxy mixed with wood flour, cab-o-sil, microballoons, or a combination, and I have heard of but not tried wheat flour. The color will darken, it pays to experiment with different woods to get the color you want.

As far as putty goes, I wouldn't think anything petroleum based would be compatible, and I wouldnt take bets on water based either. Im afraid your on your own there, try a few and see if they bond.
