Dan, I am just one step behind you in the Ches. 17 assembly process. I intend to follow a method that I learned about footbraces from a link on CLC's bulliten board. Check out this link: http://www.olympus.net/personal/sbaxter/build7.htm. This link is the 7th of many that walks you thru his kayak building process, albeit a different CLC model. He (I mean "they" - Sheryl and Steve) use hemlock for the backing on the footbraces. I don't think there is anything special about hemlock and many other types will do as long as they're curved (carved) to meet the hull and sealed w/ epoxy. I am also a bit unknowing of the best way to place the footbraces also since the seat is not in and I hesitate to sit in it just yet. I think I will end up putting it in the grass and sitting in it to place my slightly bent knees into position for a "middle" placement for the footbraces. That placement should give a future paddler of longer dimension some room to readjust. Good luck.
