hey Jack, I'm just the opinionator for you, overbuilder etc. For a quick and messy strip you can lay 1 1/2" tape down the bottom, then cut a couple of bias cut pieces of 6oz. cloth 3ft.long(it will conform better and be easier to feather at the bow and stern)for the ends(doubled). Tape is pretty thick and can get ripples if not layed well. Lots of feathering involved. Or, just lay tape all the way down to both ends and use plastic wrap to keep the tape flat on the bow and stern edges. easiest. You might try masking the tape 1/4" on either side to make the edge neater while sanding. Or,depending on where your boat gets worn, bow into sand or stern dragging. and whether you intend to have wood visible you can have the best time delaying varnishing by all kinds of cutting and layering.

My latest favorite for a friends ultimate touring boat, three layers of 4 oz cut on the bias,2",1 1/2",1" on the bow edge for 1-3ft then on the stern two layers of 4oz cut on the bias with one layer of Dynel 1 1/2" by 2'on top of that. Dynel looks like T-shirt material and stay white when wetted so I masked it off and did the fill coats with epoxy and carbon powder. Looks cool and leaves black marks on things if you hit them hard with your boat. Dynel soaks up more resin than anything so use a little and plastic wrap it down hard. I thought Dynel and polyester cloths couldn't be sanded but if you let the epoxy really harden (a month?) it's possible.

Kevlar on the outside would be very ugly when abraded and impossible to fair smooth.

Seems that Chesapeake mud landings wear the bow, ocean beach draggings wear the stern a lot.

You know, it just might be simplest to lay two 3ft strips and the bow and stern and let it go at that. It's hard to say when. Like when I was looking at the roll of 2'unidirectional carbon tape at 11pm....so that's why the bottom of my North Bay has that black stripe.
