Hi Doug,

I'm in the process of restoring an old canvas kayak I found laying on a wood pile. On my project, the skin was mildewed on the inside, cracked and had some holes. So, I decided to remove the skin and recover the frame. With the exception of 2 broken rib bands, the frame was intact, however(call it what you want) warped, or not fair and symetrical. I removed the skin and started to clean up the frame.

I'm using wolfgang's book as my bible, but augmenting the information with the discussions on the biadarka mailing list. There are also other web sites, such as the HAM radio operator that builds s-o-f kayaks for his family, that I found was full of useful nuggets.

Based on my readings, my frame was built to light (may be one of the primary reasons for the warpage). Currently, I'm reinforcing the structure and adding frames. I've decided to lash instead of screw and glue as the original builder. I'm also going to lash the existing fastening points, since some are loose. Currently, I'm palnning to recover with canvas and a cocktail of exterior primer, linseed oil and turpentine that I got off of the biadarka mailing list.

I'm learning as I go, so, I'm not an expert. But, if you have any other questions ask.
