Mahogany Frame?

I'm planning on building a modified version of the skin-on-frame kayak in George Putz's book "Wood and Canvas Kayak Building". Would mahogany be a good choice for the frame? It's the one of the lightest and cheapest clear woods that are available at my local hardware store. This kayak doesn't require much wood, so the cost would not be signifigantly higher than using western red cedar, which has knots.
