I often use narrow strips for the first strip or two on the deck. This makes the fitting easier. Every piece of wood is different, you need to get a feel for what the strip you are using is capable of. If it does not want to twist as much as you would like, you can either give it a large bevel or use a narrower strip. Either is good.
