I've built 5 rudders for various kayaks, similar to the Feathercraft type system. I get scrap aluminum from a boat builder and high density plastic from a local plastic dealer's scrap bin. Takes me about 90-120 minutes and $8-$9 worth of stuff to make the rudder.

Give me an address and I can send you sketches and sizes that work well for me.
