Chuch Holst describes 2 methods to determine length.

1) An arm span + 1 cubit (Cubit = the distance from the elbow to the fingertips)

or

2) As high as the paddler can reach with the fingers hooked over the end of the paddle.

And mentions a slightly different method used by John Heath.
