I found a light weight used boat trailer for $200 and built a rack out of 2 x 4s and bolts. Only needed a drill and wrenches. Taped some foam and used carpet on it and can carry up to 9 kayaks if I want to. The boat trailer already had a long enough tongue to carry kayaks, but years ago I make another out of a small trailer by just adding a longer tongue. Long trailer tongues make for much easier backing also.
