The guys at the Wooden Boat Shop in Seattle say varnish will be a little glossier than urethane, but the UV resistance is about the same. The concensus of articles in Wooden Boat Magazine is that the 2-part urethanes are more trouble than they're worth; more expensive to buy, more trouble to mix and apply, more dangerous to work with, not much more life, and more work to refinish. 1-part moisture-cure urethanes are more in line with spar varnish on all these issues.
