Lets throw out some numbers that seem realistic:

Material: $1,000

Direct Labor: 150 hours x $30/hr = $4,500

Administrative Labor: 50 hours = $1,500

Overhead:

Workshop Rent: $500/month,

Insurance: $100/month,

Marketing: $500/month,

Misc: $100/month

Overhead Total: 200 hrs = 1.25 months = $1,500

Total: $8,500

I left off depreciation of tools and I suppose I could do the same for the workshop. I suppose someone doing it for the love of it could charge less for labor, but the insurance included is probably just enough to cover the workshop fire/liability and does not include health. With good organization we may be able to keep the labor time down. Taxes will raise the total. In the end we could nickle and dime the cost down and we could ignore some other costs and we might find that from a purely business standpoint a builder might be able to justify selling the boat for as little as $8,000. But, as with most such estimates, this one probably low-balls the job.
