Hello, I use 3M's marine paste wax on the entire surface of my kayak, not only does it keep it looking good it helps protect against UV. As far as the wax giving me trouble when it's time to revarnish, that's not a problem because I wet sand using mineral spirits as a lubricant before varnishing and that removes any trace of wax.
