Hello, To prevent the skinning over of your varnish you can use a product called Bloxygen, this is a spray can that contains an inert gas that displaces the oxygen in the varnish can to prevent hardening, most woodworking catalogs and stores carry this product. Also if you are going to brush on your varnish I would recomend thinning it with a slow drying thinner made for using varnish with a brush, for z-spar I would use thier t-11 thinner.
