Another interesting way this type of thing can be done is to use a ball rasp to cut the recess rather than the spade bit. Home centers and woodworking outlets sell a ball rasp that's a ball with teeth on the end of a shaft for about $6. Using this in a drill press or hand drill, you now create a really nice indentation thats round like the valley boats rather than the cylinder shape the flat bit creates.
