Dave -- Curently making my first paddle (Greenland style) out of a white pine (??) 2x4 purchased at Lowe's. It's coming out OK. Just trying to make a model (to make sure I can do it), without concern about wood type or grain. I'll look for better wood for the next one. I'll post picture when finished. Couldn't build my kayak this winter, so I had to do something.) -- Greg
