I have talked to my homeowner's insurance and they said boats like kayaks, canoes and rowboats are covered in the event of fire, theft, vandalism, getting run over by a car, etc. (just like my mountain bike and other such "toys"). The most my insurance will cover without an exra rider is $1000. I asked what if it came loose while car-topping: If another vehicle didn't hit it the damage would not be covered. However, if a car did run over it you would be covered. The moral to that story is if it falls off the roof of your car, make sure it is destroyed by the car (preferably the heavy 18 wheeler) behind you.
