Kayak Building

I've always used the cheap, available coatings on paddles, Formby's, Watco, etc.  During a corona cabin fever episode, I splurged and bought a 32oz container of pure tung oil. Should last a little while. 

Is that stuff gonna cure in the jar, do I need Bloxygen or something else? 

If any have attempted this style of skeg/skeel do you  have any details or images of your skeg box/router jigs/skeg blade design? (maybe John A.?)

What clearance did you leave for the skeg in the skeg box?

I’m building my skeg blade (pie wedge) out of a polystyrene core wrapped in carbon fibre and glass, with thickened epoxy along the edges and bearing points. When the skeg blade is completed I will wrap in shimming material and build a fibreglass skeg box around it.

Is there a detailed list of the tools / supplies that Nick uses in his videos?  Specifically, I cannot find the shears that he uses to cut strips ends during the build.

Stem damage

While moving my {almost looking like a kayak) today the bow fell off the stand and the inner stem broke in two places. After a few words I cannot repeat I stewed for a bit then decided to cut off the inner stem with my pull saw and install a new one and attached the strips to that. Has anyone else had this much fun with their first kayak?

Does anybody apply a seal coat of epoxy on the inner stems prior to stripping?  I understand that the strips cover them on the outside, but on the inside I could see some voids developing when trying to apply the glass in the tight stern and bow sections.    Or is this overkill?

Well ok, maybe fire isn't such a good thing around wooden boats.

Anyway, I'm stuck on the wrong side of The Pond until TPTB let us fly home again, but have pulled the trigger on the plans (and companion dvds) for a Laughing Loon, Georgian Bay.  I plan to build his & hers boats for my bride and I.

I'm sure Rob includes all or most of the info I need in the plans, but I won't see that until well, later.  My burning questions right now are;

Can anyone out there recommend a specific glue gun and specific glue?  I found a hot melt glue website but the options are overwhelming and I have been unable to get a response to my inquiry from them.

How many layers of glass cloth should I use for bulkheads?

i can add extra support for my feet where needed.

Ok, I have a question. How many scarf joints are to many? I cut up a piece of Red Cedar 2x4x15 and out of that whole board I got maybe five  3/4 X3/16 strips. The board had a couple of nots that fractured during the milling process. I can forget about any type of grain pattern and spend a day or two Scarfing joints or should I just scrap that piece and start over.  Did I mention I am building the 18 ft guillemot L

Well, day 1 of my wood kayak build and I made a dumb blunder. Read the manual twice. Reread the instructions. Then dutifully pumped twice on the resin once on the hardner. The application looked really good. I'm thinking I got this.

Day 1, still tacky. I'm thinking it's maybe a little cool in the basement (it's between 65-70) so I get a space heater.

Day 2, still tacky. I reread the directions again. I followed them. Then it dawns on me. I put a restrictor on the hardner container so 2-1 is one pump of each. Instead of 2-1 I mixed 4-1. What an idiot.
