The mountains in the North of Wales (Snowdonia in particular) make this a good country for whitewater kayaking. The mountains are steep and form a compact area with short rivers leading to the sea. Consequently the rivers tend to come up quickly after rain, but dry up with equal rapidity. This tends to give shorter runs than apparently comparable rivers in England
