[Home]Other Coatings

HomePage | RecentChanges | Preferences

Most home builders use varnish as a final coat, for Stitch and Glue, strip built, or SOF boats. Other coatings can be used.

Paint can be used for either canvas covered SOF boats or to cover strip built boats. It's primary use seems to be in covering the hulls of sewn plywood boats.

For building a [foldable SOF]? boat, many have used Hypalon?® by Dupont®. A much cheaper and useful material is a roofing material such as Elasticote?® or Snowcote?®. These materials, once applied, can be folded and unfolded again without leaking. Some users have complained that the Snowcote® tends to abrade (wear off) easily if scraped over rocks or oyster beds.
